United Way Spokesperson Nominee-90 year old Ruth Rusie

Ruth has been nominated to be the spokesperson for a national United Way campaign. Rusie is a 90 year old retired classroom teacher, but never retired from teaching. Ruth has never halted her campaign to eradicate illiteracy; she tutors, is an active voice and member of the Morgan County Coalition for Literacy (an adult literacy program), and active with the United Way Early Literacy program (targeting youth). Although Morgan County is her home, she reaches far beyond the county.

5th Annual Taste of Mooresville
MOORESVILLE, IN (October 2, 2009)
The 5th Annual Taste of Mooresville, presented by the Mooresville Kiwanis Club, will be held at the Jones Crossing Banquet Center, located at State Road 67 and Allison Road, this Thursday, October 8th. Eighteen Mooresville area restaurants will serve sample dishes from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sample servings from Brickhouse Burger, Crossroads at Miller’s, Zydeco’s, Gray Brothers, Heavy’s, Donato’s, Domino’s, El Rodeo, Mallow Run Winery, Reflect at Cambria Suites, Biff’s, Barlo’s Pizzeria, Squealer’s, Hong Kong, Grafton Peak, Dippity Dogz, Steak N Shake and GG Food Services. Proceeds from this event benefit the Jackson Center for Conductive Education, Riley Hospital for Children, and other local youth projects and organizations. Since it’s inception, the Taste of Mooresville has given back almost $50,000 to various groups, including the Boys & Girls Clubs of Morgan County, Mooresville Schools, Junior League Sports, Damar Aktion Club and United Way to name a few.

We are especially pleased to present Paul Poteet as one of our “Guest Vendors” this year. Paul Poteet is a Broadcast/Broadband Personality, Professional Meteorologist, Voiceover and On-Camera Talent. Poteet joined “Good Morning Indiana” at the start of 1995, doing the traffic reports. Word leaked out about his meteorology background, and he moved over to the Storm Team 6 Tracking Center at the start of 1997. After studying rush hours for about 4 years, Paul spent another 3 years formally studying the rules and laws of meteorology, earning certification as a Meteorologist from Mississippi State University. Three different radio stations use Poteet as a source of forecast information and a part of their morning drive time shows. He can be heard on his flagship station Z99.5 WZPL’s “Smiley Morning Show, and also with Steve Morris on Classic Hits 106.9 WXXC in Marion, and with Matt Rust and the crew at WQME 98.7FM in Anderson.

Indianapolis Apple Fest for Homelessness Bites

This year, there have been so many jobs lost, homes foreclosed on, and people doing without a lot of things that they are accustomed to living with. Have you ever thought about what it might be like to be one of the people that you see on the street holding that cardboard sign asking for food or money, sleeping under a bridge, or hanging out at a fast food restaurant at 3 in the morning hoping to get some food or money from the drunk people satisfying their post-drinking cravings? My guess is that if you have, that you never thought that it could happen to you. You have a great job, a great family, a great car, house, clothes, social life… What happens when your employer downsizes? What happens when you max out that last credit card that has been your lifeline between paychecks and you can’t buy the winter jacket that your son needs to make it through the winter because he has outgrown the one from last year, or even put food on the table at night?

My point is that homelessness and misfortune can happen to anyone. It can happen without being irresponsible, and it can happen to folks with the best life in their circle of friends.

The Salvation Army has a campaign that they call Homelessness Bites. Tomorrow, Thursday, October 1, 2009 from 10:30 to 1:30 p.m. marks the 6th Annual Apple Fest to Bite Back against homelessness. Come out for lunch provided by Applebees for $5. That is probably less than you would spend for lunch anyway. Adrian Orchards are supplying apples. You can also enjoy Apple Cobbler provided by GFS Marketplace! If you bring a new or gently used coat to donate to Bob Gregory’s Coats for Kids campaign, you receive your apple cobbler FREE!!!

While you are eating, listen to the live music provided by local group Bandwagon, meet the Pacemates, and also check out the radio stations that will be broadcasting: WIBC 93.1 FM, HankFM 97.1, B105.7, & ESPN 1070 The Fan.

2009 Home Team Celebrity Softball Challenge

What a fun evening in Indy on Saturday, June 6, 2009. The first Home Team Celebrity Softball Challenge at Victory Field in Downtown Indianapolis featured about 20 Indianapolis Colts players including Peyton Manning, Reggie Wayne, Bob Sanders, Dwight Freeney, and ex-Colt Jeff George. Indianapolis’ own-Carlos Diaz was also among the stars that played in the softball challenge to benefit Indiana Children’s Wish Fund. Several radio and tv stations from the Indy area also came out!
